Will Vaus has led tours of the various locations in the British Isles where C. S. Lewis lived and worked and worshiped. If you are planning your own private tour of the British Isles and would like some suggestions of Lewis sites to visit, please see the sample itinerary below.
Sample Itinerary
Day 1:
- Depart from USA to Belfast.
Day 2:
- Transport to The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn, where C.S. Lewis would usually spend the first week of his adult summer holidays, and where he brought his wife Joy for a belated honeymoon in 1958. This will be our lodging place during our stay in Belfast.
- After lunch at The Old Inn, visit Silver Hill, the home of Lewis's life-long friend Arthur Greeves beginning in 1949.
- Visit St. John's Church, Helen's Bay. This is the church where Lewis would worship while in Crawfordsburn.
- Dinner at The Old Inn.
Day 3:
- Breakfast at The Old Inn.
- Tour St. Mark's Church, Dundela, Belfast where Lewis's maternal grandfather was the first Rector and where Lewis was baptized.
- Visit Little Lea, the Lewis family home from 1905-1929.
- Visit the site of Bernagh, the boyhood home of Jack's friend, Arthur Greeves, across the road from Little Lea.
- Tour Campbell College where Jack spent the autumn term of 1910 as a boarder.
- Visit Dundela Villas (now Dundela Flats), Jack's birthplace, and the Wardrobe Statue in Strandtown.
- Lunch on own in Belfast.
- Panoramic tour of general Belfast sites in the afternoon.
- Go for a walk in Crawfordsburn Country Park near Jack's beloved Holywood Hills.
- Return for dinner at The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn.
Day 4:
- Breakfast at The Old Inn.
- Take the ferry from Belfast to Liverpool, the same trip that Jack and Warnie often made together on their way to school in England.
- Transport by coach from Liverpool to Chester, England near the sight of Lewis's ancestral home.
- Overnight in Chester.
Day 5:
- Visit the Methodist Church in Saltney, a suburb of Chester, where Jack's great grandfather, Joseph Lewis, was a Methodist minister.
- Drive through Caergwrle, Wales (near Chester) where Jack's great-great-grandfather Richard was a farmer.
- Visit Hope and the small house at Sandycroft where Jack's family had its roots.
- Transport by coach to Great Malvern, where Jack attended school from ages 12-15.
- Check-in and dinner at the Foley Arms Hotel.
Day 6:
- Breakfast at the Foley.
- Tour Cherbourg House and Malvern College.
- Lunch on own. You might want to visit the Unicorn Pub across the street from the Foley. This was a favorite spot for Jack and Warnie.
- Tour the Priory Church after lunch.
- Walk up to the British Camp, one of Lewis's favorite walks in Malvern.
- Dinner at the Foley Arms.
Day 7:
- Breakfast at the Foley Arms.
- Depart Malvern for the "dreaming spires" of Oxford.
- Visit the Bodleian Library.
- Lunch at The Eagle and Child pub.
- Tour St. Mary the Virgin Church in Oxford, where Lewis delivered his famous sermon "The Weight of Glory".
- Tour Magdalen College.
- Stroll around Addison's Walk.
- Check-in to the Eastgate Hotel. Rest of the afternoon free for rest or shopping on own.
- Dinner at the hotel.
- Optional visit to the Trout Inn at Godstowe, another one of Jack's favorite pubs.
Day 8:
- Breakfast at the Eastgate.
- Rest of the morning free for shopping or visiting other Oxford sites.
- Lunch on own.
- In the afternoon, visit Holy Trinity Church & Lewis's grave.
- Tour the Kilns, Lewis's home for over 30 years, by arrangement with the C. S. Lewis Foundation.
- Visit 10 Old High Street, former home of Joy Davidman.
- Visit the Oxford Crematorium where Joy Davidman's ashes are interred.
- Dinner at Studley Priory Hotel.
Day 9:
- Breakfast at the Eastgate.
- Transfer by coach to Cambridge; check-in at the University Arms.
- Dinner at the University Arms.
Day 10:
- Breakfast at the University Arms.
- Tour Magdalene College.
- Lunch at the University Arms.
- Tour King's College Chapel Cambridge and panoramic tour of Cambridge, including a visit to The Orchard in Grantchester for tea.
- Evensong at King's College Chapel.
- Dinner on your own.
Day 11:
- Depart for London.
- See the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.
- Tour Westminster Abbey.
- Lunch on own.
- Check-in to the Rembrandt Hotel.
- Afternoon free to shop at Harrod's or visit the Victoria & Albert Museum both within walking distance of your hotel.
- Dinner at the Rembrandt.
Day 12:
- Breakfast at the Rembrandt.
- Tour the Tower of London, panoramic tour of London en route.
- Afternoon free to walk in Hyde Park, shop, rest, or do as you please!
- Dinner on your own.
Day 13:
- Depart London for the United States.
